The Guyana Motor Racing Sports Club (GMR&SC) wishes to proudly announce that Guyana is part of the inaugural Caribbean Drag Racing Championship (CDRC), the region’s premier drag racing competition, coordinated by the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club’s (JMMC) Chairman Stephen Gunter, in collaboration with Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) and Barbados Association of Dragsters & Drifters (BADD), Trinidad & Tobago Automobile Sports Association (TTASA) and us, the GMR&SC. The history books will also record that Guyana hosted the first ever event in this series.
The CDRC is a closed competition event where drag racers are invited by their respective Motor racing club called National Sporting Authority (ASN) to represent their country, ensuring an elite level of competition within two (2) competitive classes: Pro Street, 10.000 – 10.999 seconds and Pro Race, 9.000 – 9.999.
Competing countries are Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & Grenadines, Grenada, Cayman Islands and Antigua, but what makes this competition different is that it is officially registered with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile/ FIA National Calendar platform. That’s right, drag racing in Guyana within the time brackets will be ran under strict rules and recognition of the CDRC and the FIA.
In fact, Mr Daniel Coen, FIA Vice President for Sport for North America said
“It is great to see motorsport evolving in the Caribbean. The effort by the JMMC and ASNs to create this championship is commendable, and I fully support it.” GMR&SC’s President, Mahendra Raj Boodhoo, said “Drag racing has grown tremendously in the Caribbean, and Guyana has recorded some of the fastest times. We look forward to competing at the highest level in this structured championship.”
The Championship is already exciting and is run on a points-based system wherein racers compete in three locally staged national events. The top sixteen (16) competitors in each class will then be invited to battle for supremacy at the Championship’s final in Jamaica on January 26, 2026; and would you know? Guyana’s speed ace Peter Daby driving his Mazda RX7, after his first outing, is top of the table in the pro race class, with 118 points and a favourite for the championship.
Importantly, championship winners will receive trophies, prize money and regional recognition, with additional winnings awarded to the champion’s National Sporting Authority (ASN).
Drag racing was, is, and will be here to stay in Guyana, it’s an exciting time for motor sport in Guyana and we continue to thank our competitors and fans for their unwavering support.
