This website has been set up
to overlook the medical system of Guyana. For
the last thirteen years, I, Bryan Mackintosh have been writing to the newspapers in Guyana about
the decline in the quality of medical care
in Guyana. After numerous letters, we finally managed to get the Medical
Council of Guyana (MCOG) which was then under the
chairmanship of Dr. Walter Ramsahoye to publish the
list of specialist doctors operating in Guyana.
It is my firm belief that with the publication
of this specialist list, many doctors will be
unable to lie about their qualifications and as
such patients will be better able to evaluate
which doctor is better suited to their
particular case. Because of my
numerous letters published over the years in the
newspapers in Guyana demanding a more
transparent medical system, the Government of
Guyana tabled a bill in parliament and passed
into law allowing for two non medical persons to
sit on the board of the Medical Council of
Guyana. Even though we might never get the right
persons to fill those two positions, the mere
fact that two persons from outside of the
medical field is now part of the inner working
of the medical council, this by itself should
auger positively for all Guyanese. We can only
hope that the two persons selected to be part of
the medical council's board will understand the
importance of their presence and as such fight
earnestly to ensure that patients rights are
respected.
A new Medical Council is now in place for 2009, we sincerely hope they take
the job of policing our medical system with a
lot more vigor than previous councils. The last
Medical Council of
Guyana (MCOG) headed by Dr. M. Y.
Bacchus appeared to be in a world of their own,
they had completely abandoned the list of
specialist doctors. It would seem that they were quite
comfortable to allow doctors regardless of their
qualifications to do as
they pleased on unsuspecting patients. Their
excuse? Guyana is a third world country and we
as patients should allow Doctors to do what
ever they want regardless of the outcome due
to their inexperience. This seemingly uncaring
attitude bears heavy
consequence for all Guyanese. We must
come together to voice our combined objections
to ensure better health care for all of us
regardless of our race, creed or financial
status. We must demand that the MCOG publish an
updated list of the specialist doctors operating
in Guyana in a timely manner so that patients
can make informed decisions. Bryan Mackintosh.
